Today is a pretty big travel day for the band. We travel from Sparks, Nevada to Redding, California via the infamous Donner Pass. Im sure the Department of Transportation has made significant improvements to the road over the last 150 or so years, but nevertheless, any snowy mountain pass crossing that requires chains is going to get my full attention. I am aware that the misfortunes of the Donner Party have made them the butt of decades of jokes, but as a bit of a traveler myself these days, I cant help but feel a kinship to to those who feel they must go Somewhere Else™ to achieve their dreams, and I also feel empathy for those same people when it all goes terribly wrong. Im not much of a prayer guy, but the Donner family and the horrible decisions they had to make will be in my thoughts when we go over that pass today. May we all learn from their mistakes and from their courage and resilience so that we may never have to repeat that scenario again. On a related note, the band has decided that should a similar fate befall us, Todd May will be the first band member that we eat. We think he would be rather tender, and not terribly sinewy, and he seems to agree. We are loading him up at the casino buffet this morning, just in case.
