Today is the 45th anniversary of Corky the orcas capture from the wild. Since being ripped from her family in Canadian waters, shes been living as a circus performer at various Sea World parks. Shes currently the oldest orca alive in captivity, and her only retirement plan that the park has is her death. This video is a little long (about 12 minutes) but is a good video, and the debate continues on the ethics with orca and dolphin captivity. If you cant watch the whole thing, at least fast forward to the end (about 10-11 minute mark) where they show the reaction of Corky and the rest of the Sea World orcas while listening to recordings of Corkys family in the wild. You cant watch that and say these animals arent incredibly intelligent. Ironically enough, the last part of the video talks about Keiko, and how he can never be released into the wild.....but he eventually was, and he did amazing...even rejoining his family pod a few times, before passing away a few years later (due to all the medical issues he developed in captivity). I still think it was worth it though, if you watch the videos of Keiko loving life in the wild again, and looking so big and healthy with his family....I wish every captive orca could have that chance.
