Today is the big day! In late 2013, I was invited to create the artwork to be auctioned off to raise money for Little Traverse Bay Humane Societys annual Howl at the Moon fundraiser. A no-kill shelter which placed 600+ cats and dogs in good homes last year alone, LTBHS is such a great resource in our area of Northern Michigan. It rescues animals and keeps them until a home is found. And not just keeps them, but cares for them lovingly, in a clean, bright facility with humane, compassionate care. It also offers classes and training (for pets and guardians) and boarding and grooming. LTBHS has a much lower recidivism rate than is average in the US. They place many wonderful older pets as well as kittens and puppies. I didnt realize at that first meeting, when I showed them my portfolio, that months later, I would return and meet Maggie, 6, who had found herself homeless after her owner died and his spouse entrusted her care and future to LTBHS. Today, I cant imagine these months since Tyler (our 13-year-old Pekingese) died without the love and companionship of sweet Maggie May. Mark and I adore her! So, now this process of the painting is done and will be auctioned off. The event is SOLD OUT! Thats means 400 people bought tickets at $100-200 each to attend the event, which features food from area restaurants, and many items and services, and vacations even, to be auctioned in both a silent auction and a live auction conducted by a charity auctioneer. There will be live music, too. I am so delighted to have been brought into involvement with LTBHS and I hope my work, a 16 x 24 framed piece done in colored pencil and acrylic, will go for a good price, all to benefit the animals. The title of the painting is Home at Last, and the story I invented to explain the scene is written below. Wish our event good luck! As my friend says, Its all about the animals! But, I also think having such a humane organization, with volunteers and donors so willing to help and staff so professional, is a real asset to our communities here in the shore of northern Lake Michigan.
