Today is the last day of #AdoptaSeniorPetMonth, and we have an extra special adoption story to share: Penny, a 10-year-old blind Australian Cattledog, came to the SPCA of Texas last year when her people could no longer care for her. She had lived with another senior dog her whole life, a Dachshund named Titus, who recently passed away from cancer. Penny noticeably missed being in a home and being with her best friend - the new shelter environment & unfamiliar objects were confusing & stressful for her. Amanda, a volunteer, had a soft spot for special needs animals, and two immediately clicked. Shed take Penny for walks each day. Theyd take selfies together, and shed give Penny belly rubs - trying to mend her heart. I wanted to show her that there was still much love and life to look forward to. Sometimes you have to walk the walk and after a day of serious thinking I decided that the best home for Penny would be with me. Penny now lives with Amanda & her husband in Montreal, Canada (!!!), and Amanda says Penny is loving life in the big city! Penny is even about to be a big sister to a human baby brother! She came to me only knowing her name but has since learned up & down (helpful for a blind dog navigating stairs and curbs), sit, shake, wait and lay down. And, the other day? She “learned” the path we take every day through her sense of smell and decided she no longer wanted to walk —-she wanted to jog! With every day that passes we get to see a little bit more personality as she gets comfortable with her new surroundings. She might be blind but she sees with her heart. I think it might be Penny who is saving me. Penny proves you are never, ever too old for a second chance at love & life. We are so thankful to Amanda, and the many others, who see senior & special-needs pets as the loving best friends they truly are. Penny is on the adventure of a lifetime.
