Today marks 3 years since my mom passed away. I am beginning to understand what others have said about the sense of loss being different with the passage of time - its not lessened, but in some ways its better and in others, it is worse. I recently re-read a beautiful note she sent me 8 years ago as my birthday approached. I dont think I appreciated its words as much then as I do now, especially with the challenges that life has served up recently. I hope its not too self-aggrandizing to share part of it below and hope that everyone I know has a moment or opportunity to truly feel the love of your parent(s), present or not, in the way that her words make me feel when I read them today: Who but I could compose a few words about you and your beautiful character? You have brought me happiness throughout your life. You gave me a sense of accomplishment by your behavior. You have given me a sense of pride and rewarded me in the midst of my own lifes hurts and failures. Thank you, son. No, mom, thank YOU.
