Today, the theme of ‘blessing’ will be the center of our worship together. What is a blessing? I often hear people refer to their material wealth and comfort as a blessing. But where does this leave those who have little or no possessions? Are some people blessed more than others? The word ‘blessing’ comes from an old proto-Germanic word, ‘blestsian’; this word (which is related to the English word ‘bleeding’) literally means to be sprinkled or hallowed by (sacrificial) blood. In European pre-history, the blood referred to was the blood of animal or human sacrifices. In the Christian context, we think of another sacrifice: the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. By his blood, we are hallowed and made holy. Through him alone, we are blessed. And this blessing extends to all the world, since Jesus died for the sake of the world. No matter, where we are in life, no matter, how healthy or wealthy we are – we won’t be forsaken by God’s grace and love. We are blessed – always.
