Today we bring you a three-parter about Aura and her handler, Sgt. Mark Daniels, who deployed to Afghanistan together in March of this year. On June 8, the two Marines were badly injured in an IED blast. He sustained a TBI with neck and spinal injuries, and had bruising, swelling, and a couple of bleeds on his brain. Aura was left with a collapsed lung and needed to be needle decompressed twice. She also ended up with a heart arrhythmia, and had to be sedated to get it under control. This photo is from when they were reunited in the hospital in Afghanistan. According to the handlers who were caring for her, it was the first time she slept since the explosion. Daniels has been in treatment since the injury. His wife, Jesca, says, He is doing amazing and is walking and talking and almost back to normal. He has been back to work for about a month on light duty and hopes to be back to full duty soon. Aura, thankfully, is also doing very well. Jesca says she has to be evaluated to see if she is still able to work. If so she will return to duty until time to retire. If the military decides to retire her now, the Daniels family will adopt her, and if not, they will wait until they day they can bring her into their home forever.
