Today we celebrated the life of our grandpa, Stanley Chandler. Saying goodbye is never easy, but something that was shared during the service gave me comfort. It was said that grandpa lived a simple life...never had a lot of money, fancy vacations, nor flashy cars. That he lived life recognizing the importance of humor, the love of family, and the welcoming of established friends, as well as friends yet to be made. Those words made me think that aside from the obvious similarities of bad legs, glasses and whitened hair, these things also perfectly describe our (Rob) dad, Bob. Our dad is a brilliant, yet down-to-earth man, without a ton of money, with a hard-working, creative wife of 37 years and counting (Donna), who took us on camping road trips across the country so that we could see our corner of the world. He never raised his voice, unless cheering for his Packers, Badgers or Brewers. Like grandpa, he is quick with a mischievous smile and a joke; he is greatly loved by his wife and kids and is adored by his granddaughters. Seeing a number of dads friends at the visitation demonstrated how he has built that circle of friends, the same way grandpa did...by just being himself. While I am sad that grandpa is gone from this Earth, I am grateful that part of him lives on in my dad...an apple who didnt fall far from the tree. Personally, I think hes a pretty good apple. Love you, Grandpa, and love you, Dad. xo
