Today we celebrated the profession and at the same time honored our fallen. The parade was over, all attendees had partaken in lunch and friendship, and the crowds began to move on. A few dozen visitors were left in the museum when, suddenly, the air was invaded by the sounds of pipes and drums as the Emerald Society marched into the perfect acoustics of the museum. They formed into a circle, paused, and began to play Amazing Grace in honor of our fallen, for those long gone and for those recently lost, for all of those who have moved the law enforcement profession from horse and six-gun to the men and women doing the job as I write this.
