Today, we commemorate not only the bravery of the cadets called to the battle at New Market in 1864, but also the sacrifice of all Institute alumni who have served the nation. In honor of this important event in VMI history, here is an excerpt of an address given by The Hon. John S. Wise, New Market Cadet and Class of 1866, to the survivors of the Battle of New Market. It was delivered June 23, 1903, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hall during the unveiling of the New Market Battle Monument.
