Today we received a call from Laurie L. about a juvenile - TopicsExpress

Today we received a call from Laurie L. about a juvenile Cottontail she rescued off a road in Prineville. The bunny appeared stunned after having been hit by a car and was reluctant to move. Cars were zooming by, over it. Thankfully, Laurie had the kind heart to stop and save the bunny from being hit again. She brought him to us earlier today. The Cottontail was obviously suffering from severe head trauma, and had nystagmus in both eyes. It is a condition of involuntary, usually lateral, eye movement. There are two types - pathological and physiological. Pathological nystagmus is the result of damage to one or more components of the vestibular system, often from a blunt force trauma (i.e. being hit by a car). The bunny also has injured eyes and lacerations on its back and under one eye. It was bleeding from its nose and mouth and has audible respiratory sounds (possible pulmonary hemorrhage). The bunny is resting quietly tonight. We administered subcutaneous fluids with antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. Fingers crossed this youngster pulls through!! Thank you, Laurie, for being a wildlife hero!!
