Today we travel to Hre, Zimbabwe. I Took these photos earlier this year. It feels like a while ago now. This is residential neighbourhood of Mbare, these pictures were taken not too far from the bus terminal and the iconic Rufaro stadium.Ill share what I know, and if anyone else would like to add to this, please go ahead in the comments. Established in early 1900s by the then colonial govt as a place to house immigrant workers from Malawi, Mozambique and migrant workers coming from rural areas in Zimbabwe, it developed to be the centre of economic activity for the black urban population living in then Salisbury. The wildly popular and iconic team Dynamos has its home ground Rufaro stadium not too far from where these photos were taken. Legends of the liberation movement have passed through these buildings, iconic musicians have been born here. Poor planning over the years has led to over crowding, broken sewage systems and all health hazards that come with that. You can find anything you want here - shoes, hair products, a car. Its quite possible that you could be buying back the very thing that was stolen from you a few days back and its quite possible to return to your car to find something else missing! The wall paintings add a much needed exterior make over of some of these otherwise extremely dilapidated buildings. You can read more about this trend here:https://newsday.co.zw/2014/01/06/changing-face-matapi-flats/ This place is its own beast- so much history, so much culture, a crazy ecosystem that exists, yet so many problems after decades of neglect. Another article about mbare I just found: allafrica/stories/201411180118.html
