Todays Daily Reflection: Matthew 19:16-22 We try to find formulas for success; God looks for faith in action. The young man in today’s Gospel approaches Jesus with a question: What magic formula will guarantee him a ticket to heaven? What must he ‘do’ to gain eternal life (v. 16)? Jesus shifts the focus away from ‘good deeds’ to God, the embodiment of all goodness (v. 17). Christianity is not so much a religion as a relationship; it is not about rules or rituals, but about entering into and enjoying a love-relationship with the living God. The call to ‘come, follow me’ (v. 21) lies at the heart of Jesus’ ministry. We can obey rules and regulations, but surrender is possible only to a person.
