Todays Reflection Our chief and constant prayer must be the willed offering of our depths to God’s secret action. He is working to dredge up what needs purifying, his performance rather like that of a soundless excavator, throwing up rubble as it goes along . . . He says, “Let me act. Be still. Don’t struggle. Don’t have any of your own ideas about how this excavation should proceed. Just leave it to me and trust in the midst of absurdity.” In the passive purgations, God is working to produce a state of total dependence in us. He wants us to be spiritual infants in his arms. We hurt because our self-will still strives to be in control of our lives, and we struggle to evade God’s embrace, which only makes him hold us tighter. He is teaching us, not by words or clearly understood concepts, but by stamping the seal of his grace upon our deepest selves. - Barbara Dent
