Todays famous birthday honour is for the great abstract artist Mark Rothko (Markus Rothkowitz), who was born on this day in 1903. Mr. Rothko was born in Latvia, and emigrated to the USA via Ellis Island in 1913. His father, who was a pharmacist died not long after their emigration, so Mark and his other siblings were forced into supporting their Mother and selves doing odd jobs. Mark learned English quickly, so he was fluent in four languages, Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, and English. His advancement through his schooling went rapidly, as he was a very bright young man. His introduction to painting came when he worked in the garment district in NYC, and he initially painted some of the models. His abstract style was replaced by non-abstract, and his barred colours are amongst his most famous paintings. So many non art lovers dont understand the brilliance of his paintings, but when seeing one of his works displayed in a museum I cant help but find peace and comfort in viewing each piece.
