Today’s Veteran of the Day is Alyce Dixon. Alyce served with the U.S. Army’s 6888th Postal Battalion in England and France from 1943-1945. The 6888th was the only unit of African-American women in the Women’s Army Corps to serve overseas during World War II. The battalion was responsible for clearing a backlog of mail under extraordinarily difficult working conditions. The unit was then detailed to France with the task of eliminating a backlog of mail in six months. However, since the unit was aware of the importance of the frontline soldiers receiving their mail, they accomplished this task in half the time. After the war, Alyce Dixon lived in Washington, D.C. and worked for 35 years at the federal government. Lucid and quick-witted, the sociable Army Veteran is the oldest resident at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Shes been residing at the center for 14 years, since a serious infection required the amputation of her right leg. Thank you for your service, Alyce! Alyce celebrated her 107th birthday on September 11th.
