Today’s playlist from RHYTHM HIGHWAYS - 88.1 KDHX ST. LOUIS Rhythm Highways (Music) with East Side Slim 10/02/2014 05:00AM to 07:00AM 05:00AM (3:11) Bukka White The Panama Limited from When The Sun Goes Down Vol 1 Walk Right In (2002) on BMG -- Booker Washington White, best known as Bukka White, AND this tune was recorded as by Washington White in 1930 - in Memphis, Tennessee. 05:03AM (2:38) Brian Curran Tribute To Bukka from Straight Up Blues (2001) on Wildstone Audio Local -- Listening to Brian play Bukka White tunes is among my favorite things to do. 05:07AM (2:52) Brownie McGhee Woman, Im Done from The Complete Brownie McGhee (1994) on Sony -- recorded under the name Blind Boy Fuller #2, very early in Brownies career. Brownie was born Walter Brown McGhee. 05:10AM (2:51) John Mooney Im Mad from Comin Your Way (1979) on BLIND PIG RECORDS -- Heres a little real early Moon-man music. His sound wasnt quite as menacing at this time, as it was highly influenced by ragtime/Piedmont structures. Mooney is one of my very favorite artists, hands down. 05:15AM Set break 05:17AM (2:02) Shirley Caesar I Find No Fault In God from The Best of Shirley Caesar With the Caravans (1968) on Savoy Records -- One of the stars of 20th Century gospel music, whether as a member of The Caravans or in her solo work. 05:19AM (2:36) Reverend Cleophus Robinson Im Going To Leave You In The Hands Of The Lord from Someone To Care The Battle Sessions (1994) on Specialty Local -- St. Louis own Rev. Cleophus (he was a pastor here for 4 decades), this tune was recorded in September of 1962. 05:21AM (5:00) The Gospel Hummingbirds Waiting for Jesus from Taking Flight (1995) on blind pig -- A powerful San Fran Bay area gospel aggregation, who I will continue to play on a regular basis. 05:28AM Set break 05:30AM (3:56) Lynwood Slim And Junior Watson Tough Duff from Back To Back (1998) on crosscut records -- A rather rare recorded appearance of Lynwood playing flute. This one is firmly in a Jack McDuff jazzster vein, hence the title of the tune - Tough Duff. 05:33AM (4:03) Seth Walker Grab Ahold from Sky Still Blue (2014) on The Royal Potato Family New -- This new album from Seth Walker is a good one, and is the album Ive been waiting for him to make. Ive heard flashes of it over his career, especially early on, but I think his move to New Orleans helped bring it all on home! 05:37AM (3:46) Arthur Migliazza Overture from Laying It Down (2014) on Hobemian Records New -- Im a huge fan of the piano blues, and young(ish) Mr. Migliazza is a great player. He has a serviceable, pleasant voice but very real tinkling skills. 05:44AM Set break 05:46AM (3:22) Nappy Brown Bye, Bye Baby from Night Time Is the Right Time (2000) on Savoy Jazz -- Nappy Brown, the Lemon Squeezin Daddy himself. This one was recorded in October of 1956, with the Kelly Owens Orchestra. 05:49AM (2:38) Denise LaSalle Trapped By a Thing Called Love from Hard To Find 45s on CD Sweet Soul Sounds (2004) on Eric Records/Warner Bros -- As this tune went to #1 on the R&B charts and #13 on the Pop charts in 1971, this tune really isnt that hard to find - and its a great one none-the-less. 05:52AM (4:13) Tyrone Davis There It Is from Tyrone Davis: 20 Greatest Hitsr (2001) on Brunswick -- Released on the Dakar Label in 1973. Tyrones biggest hits were primarily recorded for Dakar/Brunswick. 05:59AM Set break 06:02AM (3:08) Sonny Boy Williamson Help Me from His Best The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection (1997) on MCA -- Rice Miller, or Aleck Miller, or Sonny Boy 2, or The Goat. One thing is for sure - he was one of the giants of the blues and a talented songwriter, singer and musician. 06:05AM (3:22) Fenton Robinson The Getaway from Somebody Loan Me a Dime (1974) on Alligator -- The mellow guitar genius (the nickname the folks in Japan laid on Fenton). I really do dig his style - all taste, all tone. 06:08AM (4:06) Rondos Blues Deluxe The Sky Is Crying from Live @ Blueberry Hill (1987) on Blueberry Hill Local -- Rondo Leewright, along with Steve Waldman & Bobby Nickerson on guitars, Gus Thornton, Kirk Sarkisian and D.J. Lansing. 06:14AM Set break 06:16AM (3:41) Cody Japser The Deal Is Done from Cody Jasper (2014) on self-released New -- Jasper is a young Texan bluesy rocker, and hes performing an early starting show at Hammerstones next Wednesday - Oct 8th. Im hearing a real nice buzz around this guy; it might be worth checking out his show. 06:19AM (4:43) Paul Thorn Old Stray Dogs & Jesus from Too Blessed To Be Stressed (2014) on Perpetual Obscurity New -- What can you say about Paul Thorn? Great music, cool stories and plenty of earthiness. Thats win-win-win. This is a BRAND new album from Paul, and its a fine one, too. 06:24AM (2:40) The Tail Gators Come On Baby from Hide Your Eyes (1990) on Restless Records -- Billy Gibbons (of ZZ Top) loved this band. It featured Keith Ferguson on bass guitar - very few held down the bottom of a band as well as Keith did. More of Fergusons music will be featured in the coming weeks (and years, of course.) 06:29AM Set break 06:31AM (4:44) Sugar Ray & the Bluetones Here We Go from Living Tear To Tear (2014) on Severn New -- The most recent album from The Bluetones, and one of the hardest hitting, bluesiest in awhile. Swings like a baseball bat to the noggin. Tough stuff! 06:35AM (6:22) Ryan Hartt & the Blue Hearts Remote Control from Empty Wallet (2003) on Far-Tone Records -- A hidden track - I HATE hidden tracks - from this fine band from Connecticut. Im not sure why this bunch doesnt totally break out, as they really are very good! 06:44AM Set break 06:48AM (3:11) Sonny Knight and His Fabulous Lakers Baby, Baby, Baby from Im Still Here (2014) on Secret Stash -- Probably a bit too old to call this a new release, but its a really fine soul offering from this Minneapolis-based outfit. Sonny is another of those rediscovered soul singers. Frankly, Im glad hes back! 06:52AM (4:26) Nikka Costa Love to Love You Less from Pebble to a Pearl (2008) on Stax -- I think Nikka is actually an old-school soul singer. I like her voice a lot, and her musical choices. She can really sing the heck out of that country-soul sort of stuff (think Candi Staton or Johnny Adams.)
