Toledo Alcaldes say Border Situation with Guatemala is Real Punta Gorda Town, September 30th, 2014. The Toledo Alcaldes Association and the Maya Leaders Alliance strongly denounce the execution of Police Special Constable Danny Conorquie, while on duty at the Caracol Maya temple. The Alcaldes of the Maya communities join the rest of our fellow Belizeans in demanding that the Government of Belize take a more adamant position in bringing the perpetrators of this barbaric act to justice. A little over a year ago, an Alcalde of one of our Maya village in the Toledo District, was shot with a handgun by a Guatemalan national in the Columbia Forest Reserve. Since that incident, Alcaldes and Chairmen from the Maya Villages along the Guatemalan border continue to frequently report incursions unto their community lands and barbaric acts of intimidation upon their lives, family and property by Guatemalan nationals. We cannot continue to live in fear on our national territory. We cannot continue to allow our national patrimony to suffer gross violations. We must defend our national sovereignty. We the Maya, like all other Belizeans know that if we do not employ the highest defence efforts to protect our territory and to bring justice to those responsible for the loss of the Conorquie family, it will only be a matter of time before other fatal assaults are reported. We reiterate that the Government of Belize immediately put in place affirmative measures to ensure that there is safety for all Belizeans and our natural resources along our borders with Guatemala. We the Maya People of southern Belize express our deepest condolences to the family of the fallen officer and we expect that his life will continue to thrive among us through affirmative actions in defending our Belize!
