Toledo, Ohio Fall 1973. For many years Toledo was a major grain - TopicsExpress

Toledo, Ohio Fall 1973. For many years Toledo was a major grain shipping port where the grain trade was quite active through out the entire year. Every Fall was especially busy for the grain trade at this port. There would be up to 4 boats at the 3 elevators loading grain at the same time. Boats waiting for grain would be tied up at the City Docks, Anchored in Western Lake Erie, and the Detroit River. The grain trade rapidly started to diminish during the 1980s from this port as more countries and Russia started growing more of their own crops thus using less U.S. grain. This view shows the Quebecois, Canadian Leader, and a saltwater vessel moored at the City Dock waiting for an elevator to load a grain cargo. This was quite common to see 3 boats waiting to load grain at this docksite during the Fall. If you look directly above the Quebecois you will see the Fort Henry at the Toledo Warehouse Dock unloading newsprint. Photo by Jim Hoffman.
