Tomorrow (Tuesday, 9 December, 8 p.m., Sala Emeroteca, Badia Fiesolana), the EUI Cineclub in collaboration with the International Law Working Group and the Law in Action Project invite you for the Human Rights Eve to the screening of: PATHS OF GLORY by Stanley Kubrick USA 1957 88 min English original Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory is among the most powerful anti-war films ever made. A fiery Kirk Douglas stars as a World War I French colonel who goes head-to-head with the army’s ruthless top brass when his men are accused of cowardice after being unable to carry out an impossible mission. This haunting, exquisitely photographed dissection of the military machine in all its absurdity and capacity for dehumanization (a theme Kubrick would continue to explore throughout his career) is assembled with its legendary director’s customary precision, from its tense trench warfare sequences to its gripping courtroom climax to its ravaging final scene. This powerful, fact-based absurdity-of-war film was banned outright in France for several years. See the trailer: youtube/watch?v=nmDA60X-f_A Description of the Human Rights Eve Every year on 10 December, the international community commemorates the day in 1948 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. When the Declaration was adopted, it was hailed as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”, towards which individuals and societies should strive by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance”. The Declaration, a non-binding document, inspired the adoption of more than 60 human rights instruments on political, civil, social, cultural, and economic rights. Together, these documents underscore the importance of human rights in our daily lives. On the eve of this important day, why not take a moment to celebrate all that has been achieved since that day in 1948? Join us for a panel discussion on the theory and practice of human rights (17:30-19:30) followed by a wine reception to celebrate Human Rights Day. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WWI, at 20:00 we will also screen Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed 1957 film Paths of Glory.
