May Day is a day to recognise the struggles of the labour movement and its achievements over the years. Unions once empowered us, and helped us win the 40-hour week, better working conditions, higher wages and benefits like sick pay. Globalization, advances in technology and the rise of precarious job contracts are eroding many of these gains. But merely defending what many once had will not tip the balance back in our favour. Work is no longer what it once was, but we’ve lost control over what it’s becoming. #LabourDay should not be only about defending jobs or higher wages for the shrinking number of people with jobs. Labour Day should be about what it was originally intended to celebrate - the struggle for emancipation from exploitation through unhealthy labour, unnecessary labour, unchosen labour. It should be a celebration of the struggle to reduce working hours while raising our standard of living: the struggle to free our time from the domination of the market.
