Tonight as i was walking to my car I came upon an elderly lady on the side of the road. It was dark, raining, and she was by herself in a not so great area in Hartford. She seemed confused and was mumbling to herself as I walked by. She held a cane in one hand and a little cart on wheels in the other. She looked at me and said I dont know how to get home. She continued to mumble and asked me if I thought they would keep him in the hospital more than one night. I had no idea what she was talking about. My first impression was that she had some mental health issues. I stopped to talk to her to find out where home was. She lived about a half hour away from where we were. I couldnt leave her there so I offered to give her a ride home. She was so happy she reached in her bag and pulled out a handful of money, which I refused. She lived in a small motel by herself. She told me on the ride home that she had found her neighbor unconscious and had called an ambulance to take him to the hospital. She rode in the ambulance with him so he wouldnt be alone. Once he was settled, the hospital staff had told her to go outside and take a bus home. She had no idea where to find a bus or what bus to take or if she had to take more than one bus. It is sad to think what could have happened to her. She didnt think about herself, she just wanted to help her neighbor. She told me she has no family. She has never been married and never had children. I am glad I was there to help her get home safely, but It makes me sad to think that she has no one and is all alone.
