Tonight, to get some exercise, I decided to take a walk from Avenida Paulista to Downtown - maybe a 2.5 mile walk one way. I chose what I thought was a good route, Rua Frei Caneca, which is lined with trees, new high-rise apartment buildings, restaurants, bars, shopping mall, and small businesses. Within a couple hundred yards of Av. Paulista, at least 25-30 Military Police stormed the street and pushed people against the wall, screaming at them as I walked by. I look like a tourist I guess, too old for being a protester. As I walked further down the street, the protesters were running and yelling, and began building a barracade with garbage and cardboard in the middle of the street, then lit it on fire. The police arrived and sprayed gas which I enhaled...my first time in 59 years of smelling police gas. I went into a restroom and washed my face and recovered a bit, then continued, not wanting to retrace my steps. As I continued, there were remnants of other fires and strewn garbage. I made it safely to the Downtown where I promptly drank a beer! Wow, what a night!
