Tonight your City Council the Mayor and city staff will be holding a retreat at 1450 E. Santa Fe (Gardner Energy Building) to learn to be more effective as well as other things. This meeting starts at 5pm and is open to the public. The ironic thing is even though this is a public meeting the public will NOT be allowed to speak. You have to ask yourself why would the Mayor and city staff be interested in starting a discussion at 5pm when by all rights most citizens are either in their car on the way home or just getting off work? If you ask me this is a clear indication of the Mayor and staff wanting a meeting to look open to the public without it being possible for the public (most of them) to attend. If you recall earlier this year the Mayor tried to get council to have a retreat over a weekend in Manhattan, KS! Once that was brought to light here as well as some other locations online he seemed to have found a spot a bit closer. So what can you do about it? I say do what ever you can to attend this meeting. The Mayor and the staff need to know you are not just a bunch of people so tied up in your own lives that they can get away with these types of things. If no one shows up this will be the standard for the future. Having people show up will also give council members the intestinal fortitude to stand up to this kind of craziness. Please bring the kids they need to see how city government works anyway. If you are worried about dinner I say have it delivered! Lets show the Mayor and the city staff they work for us and not the other way around!
