Too often I see people talking about the cost of food and how they - TopicsExpress

Too often I see people talking about the cost of food and how they have trouble paying for their groceries, so I thought Id make a post showing how careful planning can feed a family of 4 for under $100 a week. In these photos you will see one weeks worth of fruit and veg which cost me $19.10 from the fruit shack. I like to shop at fruit and veg shops because it supports local farmers, and is cheaper than the big supermarkets. Why pay $6 a kilo for pink lady apples when you can pay $1.80 a kilo? Also in these photos you will see 2 weeks worth of meat. (Well 12 days) at a cost of $68.37), so $35 a week. I portion the meat into freezer bags and label them, then place into the freezer. I shop at Tasman meats. Butchers generally have a much larger range than supermarkets, are cheaper (especially if you buy in bulk), and you know its fresh. I wont pay over $12 a kilo for meat, but I make sure what I get is good quality. This generally equates to $5-6 for 500gms of meat at dinner, making it easy to stick to less than $10 per dinner for a family of 4. So here we have $55 of the budget spent. The rest goes towards everything else at the supermarket (I find aldi the cheapest and best, but I check catalogues as other supermarkets often have up to 50% off sales). The rest of the things I buy are things like bread, wraps, cheese, yoghurt, milk, ham, crackers, sugar, tea, coffee, biscuits, school snacks (eg dried fruit, shapes, tiny teddies, etc), toilet paper, cleaning products, rice, pasta, sauces, herbs, some frozen veg for stirfrys, tuna, toiletries, juice, cordial, flour, etc etc. Obviously I dont need all of these things each week and just buy as required. One night a week is bludge night and its basically a pick what you like night, which often consists of things like baked beans and toast, noodles or toasted ham and cheese sandwiches. Any way as you can see, it is possible with some careful planning to feed a family of 4 well for less than $100 a week. :) hope this helps some others out there.
