Top 25 Tracks of the Year: #21. “Talking Backwards” – Real Estate Communication is key to any relationship and from the sound of things Martin Courtney and his lover are stuck in a perpetual rough patch. At least Courtney understands the source of the problem: “the only thing that really matters,” getting the words out, keeping the conversation fresh and engaging, “is the one thing [he] can’t seem to do.” So despite its brightness “Talking Backwards,” set around the impossibility of reconciliation, is actually one of the saddest tracks to come out of 2014. But there are still plenty of reasons to love it. In typical Real Estate form, Courtney clean-strums a jangly rhythm while lead guitarist Matt Mondanile does what he knows best providing huge, pearly riffs that almost act as vocalists themselves. Meanwhile the rest of the band, also tighter than ever, keeps the groove flowing in a sort of blithe manner, naïve to the track’s actual sullenness.
