Tornado in USA on Tuesday, 14 October, 2014 at 03:11 (03:11 AM) UTC. *Bob Kreitler was watching television news coverage of deteriorating weather when he saw wind rotating near his neighborhood. I looked out my windows and I could see the trees were starting to kind of bend over, said Kreitler, who was working from home at the time. I high-tailed it down to the basement and I closed the basement door and thats when I heard a boom. Within a minute it was over. I walked up to the first level and I could see the sky, so I knew that wasnt good. A tornado tore through the Maple Hill neighborhood along Highway 15 shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday. It also toppled a canopy, several trees and a tent at the Weingarten winery and restaurant across the highway. The National Weather Service in Weldon Spring confirmed that a weak tornado had hit St. Clair County. Belleville rescue officials and St. Clair County emergency responders could not be reached on Monday afternoon. The tornado damaged roofs along the subdivision on Roan Hill Drive. It must have started at my house and worked its way down, Kreitler said. Angie Fernlund, a manager at the Weingarten, was working in the office when the storm approached. As it got closer, she sought shelter just outside the walk-in cooler. The whole building was shaking and the lights were flickering, but no power went out, she said. Owner Kevin Bullman said the tornado had toppled the structure covering the outdoor seating area and hit the white garden tent. It also pushed in doors to the large party barn. Bullman said contractors would be called in to help rebuild and a new tent would be put in place for events scheduled later this fall.
