Torquay Tics wait on injury reports to select team By Herald Express TORQUAY Athletic have a couple of injury problems to iron out before settling on a side to play St Ives at the Recreation Ground. Bustling centre Matt Williamson was kicked on the knee by team-mate Andrew Gormley in the 33-all draw at Penryn last Saturday and had to go off, although he did reappear briefly as a rolling sub and scored a try. Hooker Carl Turner started against Penryn despite a couple of niggles, but had to give in after half-time after team-mate Jon Woodhead trampled on his feet. And Woodhead was wheezing at the end having most of the game apart from a spell in the sin-bin despite a chest infection. The breather – no pun intended – didnt do Woodhead any harm as he came back and scored a try to put Torquay 33-26 up. Torquay made life hard for themselves at Penryn by going 16-7 and 26-14 down at different times in the game. Having roared back from 26-14 behind to lead 33-26 it was disappointing to let Penryn equalise at the death. Three league points from a five-try draw on the road was still a decent effort, particularly as Torquay had injury problems before they headed down into Cornwall. Problems in the front row meant 18-year-old pair Rob Allison and Sony Rowe started at prop – something that wont have happened too often in the Tics 141-year history. Having gone 10-0 down to a couple of tries, Torquay got on the scoresheet when Williamson put Rupert Edwards in for a try. Alex Jeffrey converted. Woodheads first try – a barnstorming effort from 20 metres out – was converted by Jeffrey to get the score back to 16-14. The next revival came shortly after a double sin-binning reduced Penryn to 13 men. Torquays Tom Whitford peeled off a close-range line-out and crashed over for Jeffrey to convert. Torquay led for the first time when Williamson crossed on the overlap after returning to the fray. Jeffrey converted. When Jake Bolton was held up on the line, Torquay won a five-metre scrum, attacked from it and scored through Woodhead for 33-26. With seconds to go Penryn scored a chip-and-chase try which they converted to tie up the scores. Results: Torquay II 22, Cullompton II 21; Tiverton Colts 13, Torquay 8.
