Trails are unique. They can connect us to beautiful beaches, pristine springs, incredible wetlands and other amazing natural features that Florida has to offer. Trails help preserve the state’s ever-shrinking open space and provide recreational opportunities that enhance our lives—and boost our economy. Take Action Take action now: Urge legislative leaders to support securing Amendment 1 funds for investment in Florida trails. Last November, Florida voters overwhelmingly voted to invest in our state’s unique natural heritage by passing Amendment 1. This constitutional amendment provides much-needed funding for conservation programs across the state. Trails are specifically mentioned in the amendment—and now the state legislature will decide how to distribute the funds. As a member of the steering committee of the Florida Water and Land Legacy Campaign and the only trail organization in the coalition, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy helped develop a proposal to adequately fund a broad range of conservation goals—including a statewide, interconnected trail network. Urge legislative leaders to invest Amendment 1 funds to build a statewide system of interconnected trails that will preserve open spaces and connect our city centers to our natural heritage. Our coalition’s plan will ensure that a portion of the conservation funds secured through Amendment 1 are distributed to trail programs both within Florida’s Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). FDOT has become an incredible partner in developing trails across the state, while DEP can continue to enhance trail systems through the Greenways and Trails Program and Florida Community Trust. Funding each of these programs will leverage each of their strengths and provide incredible growth for our statewide trail network. Please take action today—and help ensure a brighter future for Florida’s trails and natural heritage. Sincerely, Ken Bryan Florida Field Office Director Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
