"Trained in the different version of Morse code used by the Japanese, the radiomen monitored the flow of coded messages from ships throughout the Pacific. “Within a short while, we were able to differentiate between Japanese ships, planes, civil traffic, military traffic, and even the radio operators,” said Joslin. With experience, the radiomen could determine the “fist,” or transmission rhythm, of each Japanese radioman. Combined with the direction finder azimuths, individual Japanese ships could be easily tracked, a boon to the American code breakers.
