Transcendence 2.5/4 Wally Pfister, best known for being Christopher Nolans cinematographer, makes his directorial debut about a couple of scientists, Johnny Depp and Rebecca Hall, that manage to create an artificial intelligence that borders on having a consciousness. A group of terrorists feel the computer represent more of a threat than shining beacon of hope, so they organize and attack. Depps mind is eventually uploaded to the computer by his wife and their friend, a wasted Paul Bettany. The visuals are nice, and there are moments of intrigue and mystery, but the big issue is the lack of emotional attachment that is presented by the characters. And its hard to cheer for the good guy when youre not sure who it is. The script, by Jack Paglen, does present some interesting arguments. Entertaining but deeply flawed.
