Transformers: Age of Extinction Review (Minor Spoilers!!! - TopicsExpress

Transformers: Age of Extinction Review (Minor Spoilers!!! Beware) I will admit up front that I am a homer for this franchise and I will give this review in two parts. The non-geek and geek point of views. The non-geek point of view: This is a typical Michael Bay (Director) movie - lots of explosions and a paper thin plot. The actors and actresses are good eye candy; therefore, the everyday movie goers are not really going to care about the plot. It is an entertaining romp through a world filled with fantastic creations brought to life. If you like light humor, explosions and beautiful cars, that you will only see at car shows, then you will be perfectly happy. The Geek point of View: Ok. So I get that the studios are rebooting the franchise and needed to set it up for the next 3-4 movies but, I feel that they used the laziest plot point to restart the franchise; what happens when a transformer needs to meet his creator. I know that it was a minor subplot but it was one that kept running through the movie (IE When lockdown captures Optimus and takes him back on the ship). As far as the acting, I was good with everyone except Mark Wahlberg - I just do not feel him as an inventor, sorry ladies. I do not believe that any private company can reverse engineer a technology, so sophisticated and that quickly, in order to recreate robots that are soooo far beyond anything that we could ever imagine. (I also get this is a way to introduce more Autobots and Decepticons after they were decimated by Cemetery Wind.) Beating an Alien Technology with some bullets, Thermite, missiles or otherwise is totally the hubris of man. You can travel all the way across a galaxy but some lead can take you out? Lastly the HUGE selling point of the movie for geeks was the introduction of the Dinobots - it was an enormous disappointment!! The Dinobots were introduced in the last 20 minutes of the movie and they did not even speak, no “Grimlock Smash!” come on man!! Overall, I loved the new transformers and the reintroduction of some familiar foes but the plot and the overall pace of the movie were just OK not great. I still give it 3 stars because as I said when I first started this review, I admitted that I was a Transformers homer. Any day that I get to see Giant Freakin Robots Smashing Everything, is a great day!!!!!!
