Transit survey expected soon; residents urged to participate Published on May 26, 2014 By Eric Bourque THE VANGUARD An online survey will be used to gather public feedback for a transit study being conducted for the Town of Yarmouth and residents are encouraged to participate in it. The survey isn’t up yet, but it will be soon. Speaking on the issue on May 21, Mayor Pam Mood said she had spoken to the consultant doing the study and had been told the survey would be in place within a week-and-a-half or so. “They’re working towards launching the survey within the next 10 days,” she said. She and other members of town council hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to provide input as to what the town should do with regard to public transit. “We just want as many people to get on and have a say as possible,” the mayor said. The study is expected to be finished by mid-July, she said. Once the town has the consultant’s report, she said, it will be a matter of going over it and “seeing where we are and what we want to do next.” The survey will be accessible on the town’s website. The matter was raised at the May 15 meeting of town council. The topic of public transit has been in the news lately, Hut’s Transit having announced a couple of months ago that it would cease its Yarmouth transit service at the end of April. Owner Gary Hudson cited declining ridership and rising costs as factors in his decision, saying the $60,000 subsidy the operation was getting from the town wasn’t enough to make it financially sustainable. Even before this happened, however; Mayor Mood notes that the town wanted to examine the transit issue and determine a course of action. “We knew we had to take a look at what we have, where we are and what exactly is it that we need as a town,” she said.Hut’s Transit operated its Yarmouth service for 18 years and was carrying mostly seniors.
