Transitioning Natural Hair Without Big Chop. Accept and understand that it will take time to grow out your hair. Start your long-term transition with a good trim. Get rid of those split ends! Never use a shampoo with sulfates. They cause dryness! Begin co-washing your hair ( This is when you use conditioner rather than shampoo) Co-washing leaves the hair soft and moisturized. Always use a moisturizing deep condition after every wash. Keep your hair strong with protein. Moisturize hair using a water base leave-in conditioner before styling. Always seal your ends and massage your scalp with essential oils. They lock in moisture, promote growth and softens hair. Give your roots a daily spray of water to keep your new-growth hydrated. Use braid outs, twist outs, bantu knot outs and sock buns to blend the two textures of your hair. Never use direct heat to blend the two textures of your hair. Direct heat destroys your natural curl pattern resulting in heat damage. Always use a satin/silk scarf or bonnet at night. Sleeping on your cotton pillowcase will dry your hair out. Accept that you will have breakage! You can’t avoid this when working with two textures. Cut the split ends and continue to transition. Utilize You Tube to find long-term transitioning tutorials to help you in your journey. It’s a lot to take in, but your hair will benefit greatly from these tips, and you will be that much closer to the natural hair and length you fill comfortable with before you chop off those relaxed ends. Remember to be patient with your hair and love your new texture that is growing out.
