Tropical Storm Simon has not weakened this afternoon. In fact, it is a slightly larger and stronger tropical cyclone. The government of Mexico has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the west coast of the Baja California peninsula from Punta Abreojos to Punta Eugenia. Tropical storm force winds are possible tonight or early Tuesday. Simon is centered as of 5 p.m.EDT / 2 p.m. PDT about 200 miles southwest of Punta Eugenia . Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph. Weakening during the next 48 hours is forecast and Simon is expected to become a remnant low within the next day or so. Simon is expected to produce storm total rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches - with isolated amounts around 9 inches - during the next several days across the central and northern portions of the Baja California peninsula and the state of Sonora in northwest Mexico. These rains could produce flash flooding and mud slides. Beginning later Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday, rainfall from Simon or its remnants is expected to spread over portions of the U.S. Desert Southwest, again possibly causing flash floods and mud slides.
