Trust schools are amazing! Thank you Yayasan Amir, TFM and SMK Semenchu for making this trip to SMK Semenchu, Johor possible. 3 things I learned from this trip: 1. It is very possible to bring an existing normal school from among the worst to the best within a short span of time. - SMK Semenchu rose to become the best non-boarding school in the district within 3 years. It has won many awards both academically and in the extracurricular field. - SMK Semenchu was decades old before being adopted as a trust school. 2. Good leadership will accelerate and catapult the success of its school. - Dato Noor Rezan (former Deputy DG of Education) personally interviewed 7 candidates before choosing En Samion, whom she said she knew from the outset that he was the one to lead SMK Semenchu through this transformation. She spoke of how it was paramount to pick a good leader. - All teachers spoke very positively of En Samion who connected well with the teachers and students and garnered the necessary support to go through the difficult steep learning curve. In the principals words, During both the happy times and tough times, my children and I will stick together. 3. Passion, when accompanied with good guidance will bear great fruit. - As Ainu (TFM fellow) said, Every teacher has innate passion for the kids. This passion however is often time untapped because of the lack of guidance on how to best make use of it. - SMK Semenchu as a trust school received teacher training 20 times a year by LeapEd (Yayasan Amir). LeapEd brought in experts and shared best practices and set up multiple efficient systems to ensure plenty of collaboration and peer coaching between all sectors. - In the words of SMK Semenchu teachers themselves, Without LeapEd coming in with these new ideas, we would have remained stagnant and stuck in our old ways, unable to teach the new generation. Teaching now through these new methods is a lot more systematic, enjoyable and rewarding. It is also a lot less stressful. Inspired. There is hope for Malaysia.
