Truth Without Sugar Matthew 8:5-13…In theses verses here we see two distinctly separate issues concerning Jew and Gentile. We will look at the gentile portion first. First we see a gentile who exhibits great faith and understanding in the power of Jesus, Secondly we read the comment of Jesus towards His own people in vs.12 which we will look at next time. In verse 5 we have a gentile centurion who has control over 100 plus men at any given time and he understands authority. He clearly believes in Jesus and His authority and he also is humble enough to realize that he (the centurion) is not worthy of the Lord to even come to his house. He, being in authority also, does not place himself on the same level as Jesus but he does go to the one who has ultimate authority concerning his need of healing for his servant. Jesus is willing to go to the man’s house but this centurion says to Jesus “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed” In this little statement Jesus sees more than respect, honor and humility Jesus sees a man asking for the healing of his “servant,” not his child or wife but for his servant. This man honors life and respects the value of his servant’s life. This gentile centurion became the mediator for his servant who was unable. Is this not a great example for us as Christians? This brings to mind Rom 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in love, give preference to one another in honor” this is what he was doing. And Rom 12:16 “Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly and do not be wise in your own estimation.” And according to this man’s faith his request was granted, Vs13 without a visitation from Jesus.
