Trying to sing Molly to sleep earlier tonight while she flopped - TopicsExpress

Trying to sing Molly to sleep earlier tonight while she flopped around restlessly and interrogated the lyrics of every line of every song. Always more vulnerable to this than I should be, I got drawn into a discussion of Cape Horn and its significance. She asked why so many people sailed round it if conditions were so miserable there, and eventually got stuck on the notion that there has never been a bridge built clear over an ocean. I think people who work very hard on the toughest things would get tough enough that they could build a bridge high enough and long enough, she said, or something very like that. I talked a bit about how far beyond reach the bottom of the sea is. She said the bridge neednt go the to bottom, it needed to go over the top. I said it had to stand on something. Unless it was meant to be a floating bridge? Yes, it was. It would probably get blown away or washed away before long, I said. It would have to be made of a fairly strong material, she said, and it would be tied to things. I said she could grow up to be the woman who builds the first transoceanic bridge, but for now she had to try to be still and quiet and get some sleep. But of course she enthused for a moment about her newfound life goal. She would have to find out what was the strongest material, she mused, and where to get it. And then she would have to get a lot of it. And Ill have to get very tough.
