Tubes on Styrofoam: Many people like the look of old radio tubes, - TopicsExpress

Tubes on Styrofoam: Many people like the look of old radio tubes, and similar vacuum devices. Inasmuch as they do not stand up well by themselves, they benefit from stable bases. One easy way to start out is with ubiquitous styrofoam blocks from packing. Here the big block holds a ballon envelope (type S envelope) Cunningham type 380 rectifier, behind it an Arcturus Blue RA-1 triode tipped globe, next to it an Acorn 957 VHF tube (with its little mini-me neon bulb buddy), then at left a ST shoulder style type 27, and behind it a TV compactron 15MF8, being a triode and a pentode in one envelope. In the middle is an RCA rectifier like a 5Y4 but with no markings in an enlarged GT tubular style envelope. The second styrofoam base holds two World War Two era 829 VHF double beam pentode tubes good to 200 MHz and a circa 1954 type 5894 double beam tetrode, good to 500 MHz. Some people consider the 829 to be like two 807s in one envelope. The 5894 was considered to be an improved 829. These tubes had many ham applications in the 1950s and 1960s especially for two meter band work. The plate pins out the tops helped keep leads short for VHF applications and avoided parasitic oscillations.
