Turning Point Today AN ENTREPRENEUR THINKS DIFFERENTLY August 30th, 2013 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “EVERY ENTREPRENEUR WORKS TO CREATE A FUTURE RATHER THAN TO EARN A LIVING” Memory Verse: “When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it” Matthew 13:46. One American investment banker was at the pier of a small Mexican Coastal Village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the boat were several large fish. The bank complimented the Mexican on the quality of his several fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied, ‘only a little while’. The bank then asked, ‘why did not you stay out longer and catch more fish?’ the fisherman said, ‘with this I have more than enough to support my family’s needs’. The banker pressed, ‘but what do you do with rest of your time?’ Then, fisherman answered, ‘I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. The curious investor now said: ‘you should spend more time fishing; with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor, open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would leave this little village and moved to Mexico and eventually New York, where you would run your ever expanding enterprise’. The fisherman asked, ‘but how long will this take?’ The bank replied, ‘fifteen to twenty years, after which you would announce an IPO, sell your company stock to the public and then become very rich, you would make millions then you would retire. You can then move to a small coastal fishing, where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife and whatever you feel like doing’. I think this is how an entrepreneur thinks. The man in today’s memory verse also wanted to create a future, so he denied himself temporarily in order to secure it. More money, a higher position or more influence are not goals; they are the by-products of true goals. Work to become, not to acquire. Rate the path higher than the prize. Seek not success but seek the truth and you will find both. Remember, happiness is not a reward – it is a consequence. Suffering is not punishment either, it is a result. God bless you!
