Tutors playing big role in kids lives -The Times of India The role of school teachers in a students life is slowly diminishing as the educators have not been getting legroom to innovate. The real beneficiaries are the “other teachers“ who are now playing an equal role, if not more, in a students life. Private tutors claim that they are more engaged in a students holistic growth -be it conducting “pranic healing workshops“ along with teaching biology -than a school teacher. In this manner they are delivering on the expectations of students as well as parents. “I have been teaching for 28 years, half of this duration as a teacher in a private school and the rest as a private tutor running my own coaching centre. What I find today is that in schools children are no longer taught how to deal with stress. What I can do as a private tutor is not possible in a school system. We are trying to blend spiritualism with education. We organize pranic healing workshops where students are taught meditation,“ said Vandana Puri of Vandana Study Centre, Greater Kailash. Many tutors say that though school teachers are efficient, lack of autonomy is making their teachings less effective vis-à-vis with that of a private tutor. Also, at school average and below average students don’t get much attention. Amit Bhalla, an economics teacher at G D Goenka Public School, Vasant Kunj, who started his career as a private tutor, said: “At school I can’t separate the weak and strong students, while at tuition I can help them cope with their problems differently.” On the growing influence of private tutors, Bhalla said, “Nowadays a Class XII student bunks school but is regular for his tuitions. This is unfortunate. However, the reason is that the independence of a teacher in school and the autonomy heshe enjoyed earlier is over. Teachers are supposed to be role models. We are not dealing with materials but human beings, and for that a teacher needs lots of freedom to decide hisher way of teaching. One standard rule is not good enough. A tuition teacher is different as we have to work on deliverables, like if the child is scoring 60% we have to increase his passing grades by 10%.” Another classic example is that the best of the talent is not opting for teaching. Balwant Bisht, who runs a senior secondary school in Almora and two coaching centres in Delhi, has been looking for a PGT teacher but in vain.
