Twenty-four of the state’s brightest young leaders are attending a six-day camp hosted by the SA Police’s Special Task and Rescue (STAR) Group at Echunga this week. STAR Group have facilitated Youth Leadership Camps, aimed at recognising and supporting the future leaders of South Australia, since 1990. Each year more than 230 schools are invited to nominate students to attend the camp and 24 high achievers are then selected to attend. The participants - 12 boys and 12 girls - are aged 16 -17 years and are entering Year 12. While they vary widely in their interests and backgrounds, they all share the common trait of being viewed as potential community leaders. The aim of the camp – which ends on Friday - is to develop and improve their skills and to assist them to cope with the stresses of Year 12 studies and beyond. The participants’ interests and aptitudes are wide and varied - several students have represented South Australia in a variety of sports; others have excelled academically and have won state and national awards in debating, science and mathematics; and a number of participants are active members of volunteer organisations such as the Country Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and the State Emergency Service. The students are exposed to challenges, tasks, group dynamics and leadership tests that expand their knowledge and commitment – driven by members of the highly-trained STAR Group. This week’s busy schedule includes abseiling, rock climbing, problem solving tasks, obstacle courses, debating, and sporting events. The students also hear from current South Australian leaders who freely donate their time to help these students achieve excellence. (NOTE: The camp is managed by SAPOL’s STAR Group and is supported by various South Australian Lions Clubs, SA Ambulance Service, Country Fire Service, Mount Bold Reservoir Management, Woodside Army Barracks and Australian Helicopters.)
