Two I-T officials imprisoned for taking bribe Two income tax officials, who took Rs 25,000 each from a woman for not taking acting against her for tax evasion in September 2008, were sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment by a CBI court here on Thursday. C U Ashokan, inspector of income tax, and N Gopalsamy, income tax officer, who were working at the Office of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax at Tirupur in 2008. The duo demanded Rs 25,000 each from M Vasanthi of Tirupur for not taking action against her for tax evasion. She informed the anti-corruption bureau of CBI, Chennai, and the sleuths caught them while accepting the bribe on September 11, 2008 from R Udayakumar, a relative of Vasanthi. A case was registered against the officers for abusing their official position and demanded a bribe. The CBI sleuths conducted a detailed inquiry and filed a report before the court of second additional district judge and special judge for CBI cases in Coimbatore. The judge H Joseph David pronounced the judgment on Thursday and convicting the duo. The judge sentenced them for two years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 6,000 each as fine for them.
