Two Kashmir rebels killed in Pulwama firefight Two local rebels were killed in a brief firefight with Indian government forces in south Kashmirs Pulwama district, police said on Tuesday. A senior official from the police said after receiving a special input about the presence of militants in Hundoora village of the district, forces including polices counter insurgency group and army cordoned off the area. As the forces marched ahead, rebels fired at them triggering a gunfight. A source told Loving KashmiR that a policeman was injured in the initial round of firing. The official said two local militants after the initial fire exchange took positions inside a house in the village. In the brief firefight the two militants Sheraz and Abid Khan, both from districts Tral region, were killed, he said. Khan, the official said, had stolen the rifle of a policeman after he had befriended him in Tral last year. More than 80,000 people have been killed during the decades-long conflict in Kashmir, divided between India and Pakistan, and both claim the territory in its entirety. Public opposition to Indian rule remains widespread in the mostly Muslim territory, where about a dozen rebel groups have been fighting against Indian rule since 1989 to win Kashmirs independence or have the Indian- controlled portion merge with Pakistan. The rebel groups have largely been suppressed by Indian troops in recent years, and resistance is now principally expressed through street protests.
