Two and a half weeks, 5,676 miles, (including oil change and tire rotation on a car 5 weeks old) an actual steering wheel callous on my hand, all the beauty an eye can behold, more glory than the heart can fathom, and now we are home. After 33 years, my hubby can now see through my eyes when I talk about the reasons I love the west so much; he has seen Pikes Peak, the Badlands, Devils Tower, the Rocky Mountain streams and peaks, Mt. Rushmore, the Corn Palace, Walls Drug Store, Custer National Battlefield, museums beyond counting, Garden of the Gods (which was walking distance from my apartment in the 60s) and other sites both touristy and Godly. We personally passed every one of the 450,000 Harleys that went to the Sturgis Rod Run - or they passed us! Loved that 80 mph speed limit. Weve been through 16 or 17 states and Oklahoma wins the prize for the most amazing interstate highway Welcome Center. New Mexico had the worst rest stop; unusable & so disgusting I wont describe it. In defense of NM, Im sure it wasnt state wide, just this one, but it was horrendous. Weve had such a wonderful trip; no plans other than the white water rafting which was amazing, and the train ride in the Royal Gorge with breakfast to order. Every other day was simply whatever we wanted to do, wherever we wanted to go, easy peasey. After all the activity, we spent two nights at my friend Lena Beths lake house in TN with no phones, no TV, no internet access. Nothing but lake, sky, and birdsong. That peace was slightly broken by a small tornado that missed us by a mile while we were eating lunch on Wednesday. That generated a bit of excitement. Stopped at the Tubman Museum in Macon on the way home and enjoyed seeing Little Richards first piano. God, I hated to come home.
