Two big things well be looking at today in advance of this weeks storm. First is the temperature in the clouds. Where we see 32 degrees or colder count on snow formation and wet and heavy snow at that! If the temperature aloft is above freezing....then we have other important factors to take into consideration. 1. Are we above freezing at the surface? If so....all rain will fall. 2. If we have a deep layer of subfreezing air at the surface (32 or less higher above the ground) we will see sleet. 3. If we have a shallow layer of subfreezing air at the surface (32 degrees right at the ground level) we will see freezing rain. This could be a real problem if this occurs. Total moisture is estimated at 1-1.5 inches. The question then becomes what form of precipitation will fall and where?!? An important determination of the surface temperature may be the wind. Right now it is forecast from the northeast which historically means ice.
