Two cities are looking to the Federal Communications Commission - TopicsExpress

Two cities are looking to the Federal Communications Commission for help getting around state laws that currently limit expansion of municipal broadband access. Why expand? Chattanooga, Tenn. residents can get faster speeds than theyd be able to purchase from private providers such as Comcast, and thats also helped attract high-tech business to the area. But telecom companies argue its unfair to have to compete with a government provider that doesn’t have to make a profit or pay taxes. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has said in the past that he would step in to pre-empt state law on this issue, but a period of proceedings and public comment are expected first.
