Two comments on Edward Snowden from a piece at Buzzfeed to go with the presidents surveillance speech yesterday: “In a world where I would not be restricted from killing an American, I personally would go and kill him myself, a current NSA analyst told BuzzFeed. A lot of people share this sentiment.” “I would love to put a bullet in his head,” one Pentagon official, a former special forces officer, said bluntly. I do not take pleasure in taking another human beings life, having to do it in uniform, but he is single-handedly the greatest traitor in American history.” This anonymous and murderous anger in the intelligence community is backed by former officials who have called for Snowdens head, for him to swing quite literally from the nearest oak tree, etc. etc. As Ill explain in my introduction to TomDispatchs striking Sunday night piece on the history of U.S. surveillance, part of this anger undoubtedly comes from the distinctly unrealistic feeling the intelligence community had that they could set the rules of the road for everyone else globally (you cannot avoid being seen) and somehow take an exemption for themselves.
