Two heavy rods with 20+ lb test line in water, both rigged with finger mullet for Red Drum. But a large one decided to hit my ultra-light rod that I was casting for White Perch. As the drag on the reel started screeching and the fish started heading for pylons to shake the hook, I reached above the reel and applied pressure to the line against the rod in a vain attempt to slow the drag. As the line started to heat up and saw through my fingers (reminiscent of sliding down a monofiliment gym rope) I instinctive released my grip. At the same time the fish gave an extra tug which dislodged the butt of the rod from my other hand. As I watched the entire rod enter the water I belly flopped to the deck (as I might imagine that I would if I heard the report of an unfriendly sniper rifle) and thrust my hand into the water and saved the rod and reel. As much as I would like to say that I caught the fish, he must have thrown the hook when the line slacked. Well played Mr. Spottail, well played.
