Two photos taken by Paula Moss, Number one is a Redshank and Number two a Purple Sandpiper. There is quite a few noticeable differences in the field between the two but with the pictures its a bit hard to tell their sizes. Compared to the Redshank the Purple Sandpiper is much smaller, half the size and it sits closer to the ground. The Redshank has bright red legs but are orangey in the juveniles whereas in the Purple Sandpiper it is a duller orange. The beak of the Purple Sandpiper is downcurved, a bit thick, blunt, orange and mostly dark whereas with the Redshank it has a straight, fine, pointy, red and black beak. The Redshank has a much lighter face than the Purple Sandpiper which is darker overall. The back of the Redshank is a light brown colour with no pattern to it, the Purple Sandpiper has a dark brown grey back with darker patches when it comes to the wings. Both undersides of each species is white with streaking, in the Redshank it is very fine with the black dots running down to the bottom of the birds chest and in the Sandpiper it has large arrow shaped brown feathers going nearly all the way below the bird. A few helpful features.
